From the tropical rainforests of South America, the Never Never Plant is from the Prayer Plant family, Marantaceae, who all have a stunning habit of raising their leaves at night and lowering them during the day. The Never Never Plant, Ctenanthe oppenheimiana, makes a particularly dramatic show of this, folding completely vertical at night and displaying the dark red undersides of its leaves, and unfolding it's leaves 90º or more during the day.

It grows up to 90cm in height, and spreads outwards in clumps of shoots.

The accepted botanical name is Ctenanthe oppenheimiana, but is also often referred to as Calathea oppenheimiana. It's commonly known as Never Never Plant, Giant Bamburanta.

Find the Right Spot

The most important aspect to the health of any house plant is finding a spot which meets it’s basic needs for light, temperature and water.

Perfecting the environment and ensuring long-term care needs are met will take your plant from surviving to thriving.

Read through these care instructions for Ctenanthe oppenheimiana (aka Calathea oppenheimiana), and remember if you need help, we’re an email away.

Ongoing Care

Growing to a maximum height of around a metre, the Never Never Plant will send up several new stems each year, gradually filling the pot. Repot in Spring when the plant begins to look crowded . When repotting take care to loosen any bound roots and trim any dead growth. Remove as much of the old compost as you can without causing too much root disturbance. You can carefully divide the plant into a number of smaller clumps and either pot these clumps into separate pots or space them out in a larger pot so each clump has space to send up new shoots. Pot into a hummus rich but well draining compost mix.

Fertilise with a half strength organic plant food once every 2 weeks to a month from Spring to early Autumn.

Light

As jungle floor plants, Prayer Plants have evolved to cope with low light levels, to the degree that their delicate leaves are damaged by prolonged exposure to direct sun.

A little sun such as in an east facing window is usually ok given the weak UK sun, but bright indirect light is ideal.

Water & Humidity

Prayer Plants like to have moist but well aerated soil. The compost should stay a little moist but never be soggy. We recommend you water thoroughly, making sure to drain off any excess water, then leave until the top 2cm of the soil have dried before you water again.

Temperature

As a tropical plant, the Never Never Plant won't grow when temperatures are consistently below 15ºC. Extended periods below around 12º will cause damage to the plant.

Difficulty

On the whole, the Never Never Plant is easy to care for. Just be sure it never dries out completely, and that temperatures are high enough.

Warnings

Non toxic to pets and people (but not edible!)
